Injury Area
TRAFFIC SAFETY
Project Name
Mt Lebanon School District Driver’s Education—Teen Education
Project Goal
To reach teen drivers and address safe driving topics such as: seat
belts, DUI, distracted driving, and other safety and work zone
safety issues
This program is offered through the Mt. Lebanon High School
Driver’s Education class and is taught in conjunction with Buckle Up
PA’s “Survival 101.” In the class, officers present information on
what is important for teen drivers to be aware of as they start their
journey behind the wheel. There are discussions on seatbelt use,
aggressive driving, underage drinking and licensing, and DUI’s. A
large amount of time is also spent on general rules of the road that
pertain to the municipality of Mt. Lebanon and Pennsylvania. Those
include pedestrian laws, parking issues, and laws regarding traffic
stops, police contacts and driver’s rights.

Project Description
The officers convey the information in the form of a Power Point
presentation which was developed by Mt. Lebanon PD officers.

Numerous videos have also been included showing actual crashes
and their effects. These videos are from patrol car mounted video
cameras, news footage, and taped setups that show just what can
happen when a vehicle is involved in a crash. We have found that
most of the students have never been involved in a crash. These
videos help them understand that driving needs to be taken seriously
as it could be a life and death situation.

During the year from September 2015 to August 2016, officers
taught 5 sessions of driver’s education with 266 students. These
classes were taught to students of various local school districts, not
just Mt. Lebanon students.
