T Mt. Lebanon
School District
he Mt. Lebanon School District came into legal existence in July of 1912, the same
year Mt. Lebanon was incorporated. The school district was considered a fourth-
class district, since the population was under 5,000, which meant it was to have a
five-member school board. The school housing consisted of a six-room frame building at
the corner of Washington Road and Cedar Boulevard, and a one-room frame building at
Beadling Road.

Today, Mt. Lebanon School District consists of 10 schools—seven elementary, two middle
and one high school—and serves more than 5,500 students. It also employs nearly 450
teachers and 220 staff members and a nine-member school board.

It is an award-winning school district committed to excellence in education. The high
school and Lincoln Elementary School are both three-time winners of the U.S. Department
of Education’s Blue Ribbon Schools award and Washington Elementary School has received
one Blue Ribbon. Other district awards:

I t’s the most fun place in Mt. Lebanon! The recreation department
maintains a golf course, ice center, swim center and tennis center, plus
playing fields, bocce courts, parks, playgrounds, volleyball courts and
picnic pavilions. It offers team and league play in multiple sports, fitness
and wellness classes, special events, senior programs, summer camps, and
it employs more than a hundred people, from regular staff, to lifeguards,
coaches and instructors.

Programs Many programs take place in the recreation
center on Cedar Boulevard. Ever wanted
to learn how to decorate cookies? Plant a
garden? Do Pilates? There are classes for
all of that. The department also plans music
in the park events, July 4 Community Day,
activities for kids and teens, such as Club
Lebo, and sponsors popular special events
like the Daddy/Daughter Dinner Dance
and the Dive-In Movie pool party.

Mt. Lebanon's proud tradition of golf
dates back to July 4, 1907, when a group of
30 men founded the Castle Shannon Golf
Club on a 100-acre farm and persisted with
the sport despite having to dodge moving
targets, such as cows and horses. Today, Mt.

Lebanon's 99-acre, par 35 public course is
a center of community activity where more
than 25,000 rounds of golf are played each
year. Maintained by a professional greens-
keeper, the course is home to a number
of organizations, including the Keystone
Oaks and Mt. Lebanon high school golf
teams. Its facilities include a pro shop with
cart rental, refreshments, men's and ladies
locker rooms and other amenities. Several
charity golf outings are held at the course
each year.
