2/22/10 oo often, all we hear about teens are the
results of the bad choices they’ve made,
1:11:39 PM from underage drinking to using drugs or
finding other ways into trouble. But the
Mt. Lebanon Police Association knows that
plenty of kids are doing the right things for
the right reasons, and making intelligent
choices. The association recognized Mt.
Lebanon High School seniors Kayleigh
Birks, Jonathan Buda, Emily Mamula,
Rebecca Riemer, Colby Shanafelt and
Kelsey Walsh with $2,000 scholarships.
The association chose the students based
on grade point average, but also, four high
school administrators judged the field using
a point system that weighed community ser-
vice, extracurricular activities, character and
role model/leadership abilities. “These stu-
dents made the right decisions to stay away
from risky behaviors when they watched
some of their classmates making bad deci-
sions,” says Chip Sanders, president of the
Mt. Lebanon Police Association. Three of
the students—Birks, track and cross coun-
try; Buda, wrestling and Riemer, volleyball—
are members of the Athletes on Deck pro-
gram, in which they serve as role models for
incoming freshmen. Athletic Director John
Grogan and the team coaches selected the
students.
