Narey was one of several authors rec-
ognized at the American Educational
Research Association conference in
San Diego. Her newly published book,
Making Meaning: Constructing Multimodal
Perspectives of Language, Literacy, and
Learning is the second volume in an Early
Childhood series. Topics include semiot-
ics, visual language development, criti-
cal literacy, second language acquisition,
technology and teacher education. At the
conference, Narey presented a paper on
her research on teacher reflective prac-
tice and chaired a symposium on multi-
modal literacy. Narey is a professor in the
Elementary Education Department at East
Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania.

S tephanie Dax, a 2006 Mt. Lebanon
graduate and a senior at New York
University, was one of nine NYU students
selected to participate in a television pro-
duction with the BBC in London. During
the summer she received training from
BBC instructors before being assigned an
internship on The Cut, an upcoming BBC
Television soap opera for teenagers. The
Cut will be broadcast in 5 minute episodes
on the Web site www.bbc.co.uk/switch.

B This summer, Kate Thomas, front, a lifelong Mt. Lebanon resident, held a
celebration of her life/family reunion at the Mt. Lebanon Recreation Center.

Thomas’ roots run deep in Mt. Lebanon—she is a descendant of Katie and
Parker Algeo—who owned a general store on the corner of Washington
and Bower Hill roads from 1876 to 1922—and John and Katherine (nee
Algeo) Simmonds—proprietors of the Lebanon Lodge that was located at
the corner of Washington and Connor roads for decades. Thomas is pic-
tured with her husband Rollie and her children (back row from left) Peter
Vincelette, Christine Bear, Tamara Vincelette, David Vincelette and Aimee
